Web sites to save you money

Email Print
Clock 30. March 2010 by Judy Woodward Bates, Baptist Press
DORA, Ala. — There’s a wealth of info in cyberspace that can help you and your family save time and money. If you aren’t Internet savvy, please check with your local library, community college and other places that offer basic computer courses — many of which are free.
  • PaperbackSwap.com. Register for free membership and list your pre-read books here. When another member requests one of yours, you pay for inexpensive media shipping; likewise, you can request books from other members and pay nothing for your “new” reading material. You can search by category and material type, such as textbooks, children’s, teens, mystery, cooking, books-on-CD, etc.
  • SwapaCD.com and SwapaDVD.com. These sites work much like PaperbackSwap.com, except that you pay 49 cents for CDs you request.
  • CurrentCodes.com. If there’s a discount code for any site you plan to shop, this site usually lists it. For example, I recently found an 80 percent off code for Restaurant.com.
  • Restaurant.com. Whether home or vacationing, buying these certificates can save you big-time on eating out. Search by state and region, and even narrow your search to city and area of city. A $25 certificate (which usually requires a $35 purchase) is only $10; a $10 certificate (usually requiring a $20 purchase) is around $3 or $4. Find an applicable discount code like I did and save even more.
  • Dayspring.com. Save time and money by sending scripture e-cards. There are hundreds of general and special occasion cards to choose from, plus fabulous inspirational videos — all absolutely free!
  • Lexulous.com. Play a free online version of Scrabble against computerized or real opponents from all over the U.S. and beyond.
  • Deezer.com. This totally free web site allows you to select (legally) and set up your own playlist and listen to all the music you love.
  • BlueLetterBible.org. Free access to oodles of Bible translations, commentaries, sermons, and more.
  • SideStep.com. Simultaneously check the prices on every major travel web site.
  • SkyAuction.com. Save a bundle by bidding on your next cruise, hotel or condo stay. The web site has other travel options, plus general merchandise. Low-cost “buy it now” options are also listed.
  • VRBO.com. Cut the cost of your next vacation by renting directly from the owner at Vacation Rentals By Owner. Choose from budget-conscious to top-of-the scale luxury houses and condos worldwide.
