Too much fluff

Email Print
Clock 3. November 2009 by Bill Rhymes, Shelby, N.C.

I have been a Baptist for 74 years and have taught Sunday School for over 60 years. I can speak as a long-time Baptist.

What concerns me are the last two editions of the Biblical Recorder. Inside was page after page of “fluffy” writings about by-laws, rules, etc.

I asked myself “What could all of this possibly mean for bringing people to know and love Jesus Christ?” I also pondered who in the world will read all of this. What would Jesus think about all this excess garbage in what is supposed to be an inspirational publication about Him?

I’m afraid He would have said, “I never said these things, I never mentioned petty mounds of rules and bylaws about following Me.”

Jesus would have said, “I spoke the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. That is all you need for salvation with Me.”

Alas, we take up time, effort and interest in things like the many pages of worthless material some Baptists think are important as in the last two editions of the Recorder. It makes me question the direction of us Baptists.

Call me a Fundamentalist. Yes, perhaps I am.

I am getting more and more appalled at the nonsense and worthless things that our denomination is doing in the guise of Christianity. I live by one rule: “What would Jesus do?” He would not do a lot of the worthless things presently done in our Baptist Church.

I am still a Sunday School teacher and choir member of Zion Baptist Church.

(EDITOR’S NOTE — Bylaws of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSC) require that any changes to the Articles and Bylaws that govern the functioning of the BSC be printed in the Biblical Recorder at least twice before the annual meeting at which messengers will consider those changes and vote upon them. This is a laudable safeguard and should inspire trust in the process by which this Convention of churches conducts the business that enables them together to care for others, share the gospel and dare to attempt great things for the Kingdom.)

While I do not have nearly the years of experience in Baptist life that you do, I believe I have earned the right to respond. I am a 33 year old Baptist pastor. I have been in ministry for 15 years. I pastored for 5 years in North Carolina, and have now returned to my home state of Alabama where I continue to serve in pastoral ministry. I agree with your concern for the direction that Baptists are heading these days. Many young Baptists share my concern. However, with respect, sir, the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer have never saved anybody. Salvation is not asking the question "What Would Jesus Do?". It is a matter of repenting from our sins and placing faith in what Jesus already did through His death, burial, and resurrection. That is why I believe a Great Commission Resurgence is essential to our future as a denomination. In regard to bylaws, I believe that Baptists need to be informed about what they are voting on. Otherwise, we would be like Congress and just passing motions through without having read the content.

"By this shall all me know you are my disciples--if you love one another!!"

No rules, conventions, bylaws, executives, cute name programs required--just love!!

Chad, if all the churches of the SBC are led by Bible believing, inerrancy advocating men of God, who do you need a Great Commission Resurgence?

With all due respect, I am a little concerned when someone who has been involved in Baptist life for 74 years summarizes the gospel by saying quote," Jesus would have said, “I spoke the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. That is all you need for salvation with Me.” I believe we need a Great Commission Resurgence because we have forgotten the gospel. This includes Bible-believing inerrantists. When we get caught up in the battle over who is right and who is wrong we do lose sight of the most important thing - love. Namely, John 3:16 which makes it clear that God initiates a love relationship with all mankind. I believe a Great Commission Resurgence begins by remembering that we ought to love one another. Our love for one another should motivate us to share the Gospel. I hope that you understand. I mean no disrespect. I do believe that God would have us do things neatly and in order. Therefore, I believe that conventions, bylaws, and etc. are essential to maintaining order. Nevertheless, when the focus becomes the convention and the bylaws, then again, I believe it is time to refocus our efforts in a way that makes the gospel most effective.

Chad--

No matter how conservative one's pronouncements are, people observe actions more than words. We were not perfect in 1979. We seem to be even less perfect 30 years later with constant scandals over money wasted and arrogant leadership in our Agencies.

Artist asks a great question: If we are led by such perfect believers, then why would we need any resurgence? Is it possible we are just led by arrogant power grabers just as such occured in the churches Paul and Peter addressed? Beware the perfect for they walk on feet of clay!

It has taken me a few days to respond but here goes...#1 I am not claiming perfection. I have never said that the last 30 years were perfect. I began this thread because I could not believe that someone who claimed 74 years of being a Baptist had such a weak definition of the Gospel. While I do agree that actions speak louder than words, it is still important to make sure that we have the words right. #2 In response to Artist, the truth is that not all SBC churches are lead by Bible-believing inerrantists. But that is not the reason for a resurgence. As I previously stated, I believe that the battles being fought on both sides have led us to become distracted over the real issue - the Gospel. The numbers don't lie. 50 year of decline speaks loud and clear. We need a Resurgence for the plain and simple fact that men, women, boys, and girls are dying and going to hell unless we tell them about Jesus.

Chad,

I agree with you that the Gospel is not "I spoke the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. That is all you need for salvation with Me.. " To hear that from a person with such a Baptist pedigree certainly tells us we need a Great Commission Resurgence. Chad, I would ask that you re-look at your stats concerning one statement. I do not believe you can find stats that affirm your "50 year decline" that you have stated.

Gene,

Could you tell us how the "just love everyone" and "let's not take stands on Scripture" of the CBF is producing such a phenomenal growth for that organization?

Tim,

Here is a link to Ed Stetzer's blog that has his research on the 50 year decline.

Tim--

Why do you attack the CBF to take your thoughts off the problems of the SBC?

The good of the CBF is that their meetings are not filled with control freaks slandering one another. Even after 30 years the SBC leadership is, again, attacking every leader of every Agency.

Personally, I enjoy the fellowship of love and freedom which USED TO BE the mark of a good SBC / NCBSC meeting. After years of trying to mitigate the Fundamentalist takeover, those who have joined the CBF have given up that you can restrain a fanatic.

Motivation by love causes people to decide to quit the fighting as did Paul--for the sake of the Gospel. No one is attracted to a fight under the name of Christianity--except those who have a mean strek 3 miles wide!!!
