What are we doing?
24. June 2009 by June Hatfield, Shelby, N.C.
I was shocked to read in “News Briefs” (BR, June 20, 2009) that a
resolution
is being submitted to recognize President Obama as the first African-American president. What is wrong with us?
This man stands for abortion, homosexual rights, and a multitude of other unbiblical principles. Are we compromising all our standards to honor this man? Are we afraid to stand against him or anyone of color, and possibly be called racists? What happened to standing on the “firm foundation of Jesus Christ?”
Do we not recognize people on that premise alone (committed to Jesus, only), and not by worldly standards? I am ashamed of our compromise!

While Ms. Hatfield has a right to her opinion, there are many who do not swollow the right wing Republican assumption that all Republicans are of God and all Democrats are of the devil. For the past number of years bulletin inserts just prior to any presidential election have stated that in so many words. Much of this is merely political hot air.
Even more, we Baptists have supposedly believed rabidly in the separation of church and state. This is no longer true to the point the IRS could seriously examine any church including such bulletin inserts in its Sunday service. Are we really that naive to believe what the inserts attempt to convey?
I, for one, believe we had a previous President who condoned war and torture and extravagant expenditure of our tax dollars (see Costofwar.com) to do so on a pretense of Weapons of Mass Destruction--none of which had ever been found! To idealize such a man and give him time for a satellite feed to last year's SBC is a dangerous transgression of a separate church and state. To deny the current President the opportunity is to further prove we have stepped over a line our Founding Fathers clearly drew in the sands of time.
The founders of the SBC believed so strongly in the separation of Church and State they would not invite Harry Truman to the meeting nor would they invite any Head of State prior to 1979. Anytime a politician is featured in a satellite feed presentation, he is using it for his political benefit. Even Jimmy Carter, a serious Southern Baptist in Plains GA, was denied a place in the SBC meeting schedule. In fact, Carter is so serious about the separation of church and state, he would decline such an invitatation even if it were offered!

She's absolutely right. What we need are more Bible-believing Christians in government, like Mark Sanford.

Artist28174, Ms. Hatfield made no remark about needing more Bible-believing Christians in government. She said we need to recognize people that are committed to Jesus, that means more than lip service. Our president is not a God-honoring man and for you, and Mr. Scarborough, to crticize one for pointing that out is a sad statement.

Since when have we defined "God fearing" only in white-southern-republican-etc. terms??
If we so focus our moral shiper rifle scope on gays and ordained women, then we miss such important matters of ordained SBC clergy being preditors, a supposedly saved-from-alcohol former president whose administration turned its head from Securities and Exchange rules which allowed buddies to rob old and getting old folks of their hard earned investment. Plus we have a "righteous" war when the rest of the world sees us as gunslingers!
It is like a magician's hat trick when distraction allows the other hand to produce something out of thin air. I was trying to say that simple minds are easily fooled when simple religion uses emotions like hate and prejudice to keep our thoughts off the clear teachings of the 4 Gospels.
