Concern over CLPA direction

After reading the article about the recent Baptist State Convention Board of Directors meeting concerning the report of the Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee (June 7 issue) I am quite concerned. Ron Varner's statements trouble me and raise some questions that cry out for answers.

If the Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee is going to speak "for" and not "to" North Carolina Baptists, I must ask if this role is assigned them in the Constitution and/or the Articles of Incorporation? How will they determine what N.C. Baptists will say on a given subject or issue? Who will choose the subject or issue? And, will their proclamations contain any input beyond this select committee?

Frankly, I think this is an arrogant and un-baptistic shift to say the least. Even before they dare make a statement on any subject, it will be suspect for me. I don't need a committee to speak for me. Their action will be presumptuous - they will need a disclaimer for this N.C. Baptist saying I may or may not agree!
