I am appalled at the 2008 Staley Lecture subject on Christian unity. Steven Harmon, whom I respect but contend with on many theological necessities, provides evidence of unbiblical and anti-Baptist theology. Harmon's idea that equates Christian unity with Barack Obama's decision to not denounce his "former" pastor then seeks to support it by providing an overview of Ephesians is simply poor exegesis on his part.
In fact, Ephesians calls for us to contend on such issues (6:10-20) and rally around Christ (2:11-22). We are to be united on our diversities of God-given positions and skills (4:1-16) not immorality and unbiblical ideologies that Wright and Obama proclaim. It is also illogical to designate Barack Obama and Wright's relationship as Christian unity, seeing that Wright doesn't believe in anything that is Christian or unifying.
Dr. Harmon, may all Baptists gather to pray for you, Mr. Obama and Dr. Wright as the three of you come to a correct understanding of God's word.
