Friday, June 27, 2003 'All Christians are creedal'There is not a thing in the world wrong with the Baptist Faith and Message of 2000. There is not one line in it that is not in accord with what the overwhelming majority of Southern Baptists have historically believed and practiced. The autonomy of no church or regional Baptist body has been threatened. That is a legal impossibility. The priesthood of no believer has been assailed. It is a good confession that was overwhelmingly adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention and no one who rejects it has a right to be on the payroll of any Southern Baptist entity. It is time to stop the nonsense. All Christians are creedal. The word has its roots in the Latin word, Credo, which means "I believe." The moment we say we believe in Christ we are creedal. It is time to be honest and quit playing little word games. Baptists have been adopting creedal or confessional statements since 1524.Every Baptist is free to reject the confession just as we have the right to accept it. Southern Baptists are not going to be jerked about by liberal fanatics, misguided feminists or political correctness. I believe that we can count on them staying by their historical beliefs and practices.
