Residents of Grifton have seen thousands of North Carolina Baptists at work since Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Based at the Grifton Mission Ministry warehouse, Baptist volunteers have helped rebuild homes, churches and families.
Recently, a new ministry was offered from the Grifton warehouse - free dental care.
Mecklenburg Baptist Nursing Fellowship (MBNF), Baptist Men's medical/dental bus, and Grifton Mission Ministries joined forces to provide free dental care to residents of Pitt County.
Elizabeth Locklare and Laura Cuthbertson of MBNF were instrumental in planning and organizing the five-day dental clinic held at the Grifton Mission Ministry warehouse.
The group sponsors a free dental clinic one week each month in Charlotte using the North Carolina Baptist Men's medical/dental bus. They have also participated in medical/dental missions to Vermont and Kentucky.
Two buses are available through Baptist Men to organizations throughout the state wishing to offer physical and spiritual care.
A bus driver/hostess team accompany the bus and provide support to the dental team. Glenn and Charlotte Stuart of Four Oaks volunteered as bus driver and hostess for the week in Grifton.
Ninety patients were provided free dental care including tooth extractions and fillings. Dentists and volunteers came from as far away as Charlotte and Lumberton devoting their time and professional services.
Another clinic is planned for September.
