N.C. Baptists to serve in SBC posts

Eleven N.C. Baptists have been nominated or named to serve on Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) boards or committees.

Seven N.C. Baptists have been nominated by the 2008 SBC Committee on Nominations to serve on either the SBC Executive Committee, the four denominational boards, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission or one of the six seminaries. They will serve if elected by the messengers to the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, June 10-11 in Indianapolis.

Al Gilbert of Winston-Salem is one of 15 people nominated for a second term on the 83-member SBC Executive Committee.

Barry D. Hartis of Greensboro is one of six people nominated for a second term on the Guidestone Financial Resources board.

Donna L. Nealy of Boone and O.G. (Tim) Locher of Hendersonville were nominated for second terms on the International Mission Board.

Bruce L. Franklin, a layperson and member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Henderson, is nominated for a four-year term on the North American Mission Board. He will replace Willo'deane F. Tenery of Mocksville who is ineligible for re-election.

Jesse W. Messer, layperson and member of Merriman Avenue Baptist Church, Asheville, has been nominated to replace Ronald C. Barber of Wilmington on the LifeWay Christian Resources board. Barber is ineligible for re-election. Messer term will expire in 2012.

David W. Wagoner of Charlotte is nominated for a second term on the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary board.

SBC President Frank Page has named four N.C. Baptists to SBC committees.

Page appointed Bill Coleman of Glennview Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and Kenny Gooden of Union Grove Baptist Church in Yadkinville to the SBC Committee on Committees.

The Committee on Committees will assemble in Indianapolis just prior to the SBC's June 10-11 annual meeting to nominate members of the Committee on Nominations, who, in turn, nominate trustees to serve on boards of the various entities of the SBC. SBC Bylaw 19 also provides that the Committee on Committees "shall nominate all special committees authorized during the sessions of the Convention not otherwise provided for."

The Committee on Committees has 70 members, two from each of the 35 state or regional conventions qualified for representation on boards of SBC entities.
