WASHINGTON, D.C. - Baptists from North Carolina were prominent in several respects during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) General Assembly June 28-29.

Jack Glasgow, pastor of Zebulon Baptist Church, was tapped as "moderator-elect" for the national organization. He will serve in that capacity in 2008, and become moderator in 2009.

Jay and Cokie Westfall, members of Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington, were commissioned as missionaries to India during ceremonies at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly June 28.

The Westfalls will work in Bangalore, one of India's largest cities, as self-supporting affiliate missionaries. Jay will continue his work as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry and serve as a medical liaison. Cokie, a recent graduate of the Campbell University Divinity School, will be involved in holistic ministries, primarily among women and children.

The Westfalls said their sense of call to missions arose from their participation, over the past four years, in mission trips to India that Winter Park Baptist has sponsored.

Eric Porterfield, Winter Park's senior pastor, presented the Westfalls during the commissioning service, pledging the church's support and prayers for their ministries.

Paula Settle, who served for many years in North Carolina, was appointed as an affiliate missionary to work in a rural poverty initiative in eastern Kentucky.

At the end of the first day, 379 North Carolinians from about 110 churches were among the 2,426 participants who had registered.

A standing room only group attended a meeting of CBF-NC, where they heard coordinator Larry Hovis report that contributions continue to grow, with receipts currently exceeding budget expenditures for the year.
